The future of online music has arrived

Songbird 0.1 Proof-of-Concept has been released!
With this announcement the first seeds of a new media world are sown. Songbird is a media player like no other. It will access your music library and it will connect directly to many music and content delivery sites online. The fundamental new development here is that the central screen area is a web browser which will detect audio and video media linked to or embedded in the page you are viewing and then play that media immediately upon request.

Programmer Rob Lord has utilised XUL technology into his new app and has excited the tehcnoscenti "Screw Web 2.0, XUL moves us straight into the Web 3.0 that technologists like you and I that "get it" are really looking forward to :)"
-Mike Rundle on TechCrunch

This is a truly exciting development for consumers, content providers and programmers alike as the app is buoilt around Fiefox code and allows for plug-ins,etensions and playlist provision from allcomers.

This is a must for all who can to

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This looks like a great idea. The application appears to have a sleek, consistent interface. I am primarily a PC user at work and home, but I do use an Apple PowerBook for writing, hobby and for personal productivity. I would like to see an OS X and Linux version of the application if it gets off the ground. I noticed it's a proof-of-concept. Is this something that was built in the hopes of garnering investors or was this done as a project for education or ...? I would search their site for further information about the future of the application, but it appears the site is getting hammered by connections right now. It's touch and go as to whether it loads or not.

I am sure someone worked very hard on this, but as it was released It was touted as the best thing since sliced bread (an itunes killer). The interface is horrible. The black scheme doesn't look sleek, because the web pages are loaing in the application some of them do not fit correctly, it does not interface with my Yahoo Unlimited Music Service. This is far from an Itunes killer. What is really is is a browser that reads mp3 files from any web page you visit into the player. Just search through the code and pull out any mp3 files. Why not just use the traditional Firefox interface with toolbars on the left or top or a local web based simple interface.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to bash the project because I think that alternatives to iTunes are great, and as a developer I 100% appreciate the hours and energy put into the app, but please leave the hype at home.

I apologize was alittle to quick on the submit button, the interface is not horrible. I undestand that this is a beta, and that it will continually improve. Best of luck with the project!!
